Prince Harry is reconsidering plans to bring Meghan Markle and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to the UK next month after British authorities declined a request for taxpayer-funded police protection, according to media reports. The Sussexes were expected to make their first family trip to Britain in four years, with the visit linked to events marking the countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham. However, the proposed visit is now under review following the latest security setback.

Security decision throws travel plans into uncertainty

Sources quoted by UK media said Harry’s team was informed on Friday that no publicly funded police security would be provided outside royal residences during the family’s stay. While police protection would be available when staying on a royal estate as guests of King Charles, the duke would otherwise have to rely on his private security team accompanying him from California.A UK government spokesperson said the country’s protective security arrangements remain “rigorous and proportionate” but declined to comment on individual cases.

Harry still keen to make the visit happen

Reports suggest the Duke of Sussex is deeply upset by the decision but remains determined to explore options that could allow the trip to proceed safely. The family was expected to spend around five days in Britain, with Meghan scheduled to accompany Harry at several public engagements in London and the Midlands. Harry was also due to visit charities he continues to support in the UK.

Possible reunion with King Charles in jeopardy

The uncertainty surrounding the trip could also affect a potential reunion between King Charles III and his youngest grandchildren.Archie and Lilibet have not seen their grandfather in person since Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022. Harry reportedly told friends he was looking forward to his children reconnecting with the King during the visit.Although Buckingham Palace has not confirmed whether a family meeting was planned, recent interactions between Harry and Charles had fuelled speculation of improving relations.

Long-running security dispute continues

The latest development comes more than a year after Harry lost a legal challenge against the Home Office over his entitlement to automatic police protection while visiting Britain.Following that ruling, Harry publicly stated that he did not believe it was safe to bring Meghan and their children to the UK without adequate security arrangements. His team had been awaiting the outcome of a fresh security review by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec), the body responsible for determining protection levels for senior royals and other high-profile individuals.

Signs of a thaw in royal relations

Harry last met King Charles in September during a private meeting at Clarence House, marking their first face-to-face encounter since early 2024.Observers had viewed the meeting as a tentative step towards repairing strained ties following the duke’s memoir Spare and a series of high-profile interviews critical of the Royal Family. For now, a final decision on whether Meghan, Archie and Lilibet will travel to Britain is expected in the coming days.
