The Child Welfare Committee in Kerala has started a campaign against the use of cosmetics among schoolchildren. The campaign was launched in Kollam after concerns were raised over increasing use of makeup products in schools.The campaign was inaugurated at Mayyanad Higher Secondary School in Kollam, where teachers said they have noticed students bringing cosmetics to school and using them during break time, often applying them excessively on their faces, according to a report by local media, Mathrubhumi. Officials said earlier health department reports had indicated that elements present in cosmetics could be linked to serious health problems, including intestinal cancer in children. The campaign also draws on a study report from the Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, which suggested a rise in cases of intestinal cancer among children in Kollam, Ernakulam and Kozhikode districts.Lipstick, eyeliner, eyeshadow, blush and face creams contain elements like mercury and cadmium and exposure to such substances can affect not just the skin but also internal organs. Higher levels of these chemicals may lead to allergies, hormonal issues, growth-related problems and other long-term health concerns.Since children’s skin is thinner, chemicals in such products are absorbed more quickly into the body, increasing potential health risks. The awareness programme will include classes for students on the health impact of cosmetic use, with an aim to discourage their use in schools.Schools that complete the awareness sessions led by health experts will be declared “lipstick-free campuses.” Parents will also be included in the sensitisation drive.The campaign will not be limited to schools. Awareness classes will also be conducted in residential associations, Kudumbashree neighbourhood groups and other community organisations.Concerns have also been raised about the sale of cosmetic products near schools. Officials said that the Child Rights Commission has recommended wider inspections and expansion of the awareness programme across the state.
