Frontotemporal dementia symptoms can range from changes in behaviour to loss of empathy and memory issues. In 2022, Bruce was initially diagnosed with aphasia, then his family realised he had an even more serious condition. The misdiagnosis indicated that the neurological disorder is complex and can be difficult for medical professionals to diagnose correctly.His wife of 17 years, Emma Heming, recently clarified on The Bossticks podcast that Bruce did not have memory issues, but rather his speech had been impacted by the condition. “The one that Bruce has affects language, but there’s another variant that will affect behaviour and another one that could affect movement,” she said. “That’s a different part of the brain. So when people say ‘Oh, you know, does he remember who you are?’ Well, he does because he doesn’t have Alzheimer’s; he has FTD.” She continued: “I think that’s a very common misconception that, when you think of dementia, we think of memory loss.”
