MUMBAI: Jaguar Land Rover will cut about 4,000 jobs – just under 10% of its 43,000-strong global workforce – over the next two years, as part of a transformation plan aimed at countering US tariff pressures and intensifying competition from carmakers based in China.The Tata Motors-owned group said in a statement it is targeting £1.7 billion ($2.3 billion) in savings over two years to push its break-even point towards 300,000 units. The cuts will not touch direct manufacturing roles and will be achieved through voluntary means wherever possible. Most job losses will fall in the UK, where JLR is based.The UK govt will not intervene to prevent the restructuring, British media has reported. JLR said the savings would strengthen its ability to deliver profitable growth.The company’s troubles have mounted. Revenue fell nearly 10% in its most recent quarter, and pretax profit dropped 69% to £109 million. A cyber-attack last year forced JLR to halt production for more than a month, compounding losses already strained by Trump’s tariffs.To blunt the tariff impact, JLR plans to build new Defender-branded vehicles inside existing Stellantis plants in the US – a move that lets it assemble vehicles on American soil without the capital outlay of a standalone factory.JLR said in the statement that the restructuring would cut organisational complexity and support its commitment to invest £15-18 billion in electrification, digital technology, advanced manufacturing and customer experience over the next five years.
