Yet, for decades, almost every one of those machines has depended on diesel, leaving farmers to bear rising fuel costs and maintenance expenses. While global automobile companies focused on electric passenger cars, one Indian engineer believed the real opportunity lay elsewhere — in the country’s farms.That engineer is Anoop Srikantaswamy, an automotive professional who spent over a decade working with global giants such as Toyota, Volvo, Accenture and Ola before taking an entrepreneurial leap. Instead of building another electric car startup, he chose one of the toughest engineering challenges in Indian mobility: developing electric tractors designed specifically for Indian farming conditions.Today, his Bengaluru-based startup Moonrider is attracting investors, securing large customer commitments and attempting to redefine agricultural mechanisation through clean technology.His journey shows that sometimes the biggest innovations emerge not from crowded industries, but from solving problems everyone else has overlooked.

From engineering classrooms to the world’s leading automotive companies

Anoop completed his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University before strengthening his leadership skills through an Executive General Management Programme at Cornell University.His professional journey began at Toyota Kirloskar Motor, where he worked on new product development and learned the processes behind one of the world’s most respected automobile manufacturers.He later spent more than nine years at Volvo Group, rising through multiple engineering leadership roles while working on global vehicle development programmes. During this period, he gained hands-on experience in designing complex automotive systems, leading engineering teams and understanding how world-class vehicle platforms are built.After Volvo, he briefly led electric vehicle consulting initiatives at Accenture before joining Ola as Director of Product Development. By then, he had spent more than 12 years inside some of the world’s largest automotive organisations.But one question continued to stay with him.If India was the world’s largest tractor market, why wasn’t anyone building world-class electric tractors specifically for Indian farmers?

Leaving a successful corporate career to solve a rural problem

In 2023, Anoop decided to leave the comfort of corporate leadership and start from scratch.Along with his former Volvo colleague Ravi Kulkarni, he founded Moonrider in Bengaluru with a simple yet ambitious vision: make farming more profitable, sustainable and technologically advanced.Rather than adapting overseas tractor designs, the founders decided to build an entirely new platform from the ground up for Indian agriculture.Their goal wasn’t merely to replace diesel with batteries.They wanted tractors that would reduce operating costs, improve efficiency and prepare Indian agriculture for the future.

Building electric tractors designed for Indian farms

Moonrider’s tractors are available in multiple power categories, including 27 HP, 50 HP and 75 HP variants, catering to different farming requirements.The company has introduced several engineering innovations that distinguish its products from conventional electric tractors.Among them is what Moonrider describes as the world’s first oil-cooled battery thermal management system for tractors, helping batteries perform reliably even under demanding agricultural conditions.The tractors also feature an in-house battery pack, active battery balancing technology, over-the-air software updates, mobile app integration and support for future autonomous and platooning capabilities.Perhaps the most remarkable milestone came during the company’s early days.From concept to working prototype, the engineering team reportedly completed development in less than 40 days, an unusually rapid timeline in the automotive industry. The technology has also been patented in India.

Strong investor confidence and thousands of planned deliveries

Building heavy electric vehicles requires significant capital, and Moonrider has already attracted notable investor interest.The startup has raised around $8.38 million from investors, including pi Ventures and Micelio.It has also signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) for approximately 6,000 tractor deliveries over the next three years, providing early validation for its business model.Customer deliveries have already begun, marking the transition from engineering innovation to commercial deployment.For a startup operating in one of the most capital-intensive sectors of manufacturing, these milestones indicate growing confidence in India’s agricultural electrification story.

Many engineering graduates dream of joining multinational companies, and Anoop achieved exactly that by working with globally respected automobile manufacturers.Yet, after years of international experience, he chose to leave a stable corporate career to solve a uniquely Indian challenge.Instead of competing in the already crowded electric car market, he focused on a sector that directly impacts millions of farmers and the country’s food security.His journey highlights an important lesson for students: world-changing innovation doesn’t always mean inventing something entirely new.
