India enjoyed another productive day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on July 28, adding two silver medals to its tally while its boxers continued their impressive run by assuring three more medals with semifinal berths.Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh and weightlifter Harjinder Kaur headlined India’s performances, while mixed fortunes followed across athletics, swimming, para swimming, boxing and lawn bowls.

Gulveer, Harjinder bring home silver

The biggest highlights of the day came from athletics and weightlifting. Gulveer Singh scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the men’s 10,000m, claiming silver with a brilliant time of 27:49.78. He stayed with the leading pack throughout the race before producing a powerful final-lap sprint to finish behind Australia’s Ky Robinson. In weightlifting, Harjinder Kaur claimed the silver medal in the women’s 69kg category with a total lift of 227kg, improving on the bronze medal she won at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Boxers guarantee three more medals

India’s boxing contingent continued to impress as Jadumani Singh, Preeti Pawar, and Priya Ghanghas all advanced to the semifinals by winning their respective quarterfinal bouts, ensuring at least bronze medals.

  • Jadumani Singh defeated Zambia’s Mwengo Mwale in the men’s 55kg quarterfinal.
  • Preeti Pawar outclassed Nicole Clyde of Northern Ireland in the women’s 54kg quarterfinal.
  • Priya Ghanghas overcame Scotland’s Niamh Mitchell in the women’s 60kg quarterfinal.

However, Kapil Pokhariya exited the men’s 90kg event after losing to Scotland’s Robert McNulty, while Parveen Hooda bowed out following her defeat to England’s Sacha Hickey in the women’s 65kg quarterfinal.

Mixed results in athletics and swimming

Athletics produced contrasting results for the Indian contingent. Vishal TK booked his place in the men’s 400m semifinals, while Rajesh Ramesh failed to progress from the heats. Young high jumper Pooja Singh also saw her campaign end after missing out on a place among the medal winners. In the pool, Srihari Nataraj qualified for the men’s 100m backstroke semifinal but could not advance to the final after finishing sixth in his semifinal race. Veteran swimmer Sajan Prakash finished 28th overall in the men’s 50m butterfly heats and missed out on a semifinal berth.Weightlifting setback, bowls victoryIndia also endured disappointment in weightlifting as Nirupama Devi Seram recorded a Did Not Finish (DNF) in the women’s 63kg competition after failing to register a successful clean and jerk lift. Meanwhile, the lawn bowls duo of Dinesh Kumar and Navneet Singh kept India’s hopes alive with a victory over the Cook Islands in the men’s pairs sectional match.
