For many engineering graduates, success follows a familiar path—earn a degree from a prestigious institute, secure a well-paying corporate job, climb the career ladder and settle into a comfortable life.Capt. Amar Simha Yadav chose a different path.After graduating with a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Mandi in 2017, he joined Larsen & Toubro (L&T) as a Senior Engineer, working on major infrastructure projects in the UAE. Over the next six years, he served as a Captain and Combat Engineer Officer, leading troops in some of the country’s most demanding operational environments. Today, he has embarked on another chapter by joining the one-year MBA Executive programme at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta.
Choosing purpose over comfort
The decision was anything but easy.Amar has shared that his parents wanted him to continue with his stable engineering career. From engineer to Army officer
After joining the Indian Army in 2019, Amar underwent one of the country’s most rigorous military training programmes before being commissioned as a Combat Engineer Officer.His responsibilities extended far beyond technical engineering.During his service, he commanded an Engineer Task Force comprising more than 120 military personnel and over 200 civilian workers. The team executed operational works including road construction, habitat development, snow clearance, water-point establishment and infrastructure support in high-altitude border outposts and counter-insurgency areas.As Company Commander, he trained and mentored more than 100 soldiers while managing operations, logistics, technical maintenance and troop welfare.He also served as Adjutant of his regiment, overseeing the administration and discipline of more than 700 personnel.
Leading beyond the battlefield
Amar’s responsibilities were not confined to military operations.He trained Assam Police Commando Battalion personnel in live mine handling, counter-IED operations, bomb disposal techniques and assault bridge construction.He also led rescue columns during flood relief operations, demonstrating the Army’s role in disaster response alongside national security.Later, he headed the subdivision responsible for planning and coordinating strategic defence infrastructure projects worth more than Rs 500 crore across the Kerala coastal zone. His work also involved coordination with government agencies for multiple Coast Guard establishments.These assignments demanded leadership under pressure, strategic planning and the ability to make critical decisions in challenging situations.
A new mission at IIM Calcutta
After completing more than six years in uniform, Amar has now joined the MBA Executive programme at IIM Calcutta.For him, management education is not a departure from leadership but an extension of it.His professional journey already combines engineering, military leadership, infrastructure management and strategic planning. The management programme marks the beginning of another phase where he hopes to apply those experiences in new organisational and leadership roles.
