With the declaration of Class 12 results, discussions in most houses usually center around engineering colleges, medical competitive exams, and colleges. But for Tanvi Sharma, who is from Rajouri of Jammu and Kashmir and is 18 years old, the future was to be something else entirely.While most of her peers were getting ready for NEET and JEE exams, Tanvi took a very unconventional route. She decided to opt for the Merchant Navy as a career.Her decision has now paid off. Just weeks after completing Class 12, Tanvi cleared the Merchant Navy examination in 2025 after preparing on her own for barely a month. She is now set to begin her training in August.
Looking beyond conventional careers
In an interaction with ANI, Tanvi says she was never short of options after finishing school. Engineering and medicine were both open to her, but neither felt like the destination she wanted.“I had many options because I could have pursued either NEET or JEE. However, I wanted to find a truly unique career,” she said to ANI.For her, choosing the Merchant Navy was about more than securing a job. It was about carving out a different identity and showing that success does not always lie on the most travelled road.“I wanted to set an example for future generations,” she added.It was a bold decision, especially at a time when students often feel pressured to follow familiar career paths.
One month that changed everything
Unlike many competitive examinations that involve months, or even years, of coaching, Tanvi relied largely on self-study.She prepared for the examination in just one month, believing that focused effort mattered more than the number of hours spent with books.Looking back, she says the biggest lesson she learnt was that determination cannot be borrowed. “You cannot gain enough from external sources alone unless you ignite that passion and fire within yourself to achieve your goal,” she told ANI.Those words perhaps explain her journey better than any result ever could.
A journey that went beyond books
Clearing the examination was only one part of the challenge. The selection process required Tanvi to travel repeatedly across the country, appearing for different stages of recruitment in cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Goa. Each trip meant leaving home, adapting to unfamiliar surroundings, and staying focused despite the pressure.For a teenager fresh out of school, it was an experience that demanded maturity as much as preparation. Yet she kept moving forward, one stage at a time.
The constant behind every milestone
When asked who deserved the biggest share of the credit, Tanvi did not hesitate.“My mother,” she said in the interaction with ANI.In all the preparation as well as in all the long trips for the exams, she always had her mother to inspire her. Tanvi is scheduled to join the Merchant Navy in August, stepping into a profession that promises responsibility, discipline, and life far beyond the boundaries of her hometown.Today, she says she feels “incredibly proud and happy” to have reached this stage.Her story is not one of overnight success.
